My Approach To Learning NLP
Natural Language Processing sits at the intersection between Linguistics and Computer Science. It turns out that intersection is right up my alley. But Natural Language Processing remains a wide, complex, and ever-evolving field. In order to keep learning and progressing, it is very important to understand the goals and aims behind NLP, and how its applications affect our lives. A good mix of theoretical knowledge and practical projects is the best way to fully grasp the underlying principles of NLP. However, sometimes it can be hard to advance if you do not have clear goals and direction. Most importantly, to know how to reach your goals, you need to know where you are starting at.
My Journey
I have been fascinated with Computer Sciences and Programming since high school. However, after a one-year experience as an exchange student in the US, I decided to go in a different direction for my university studies. I completed a B.A. in Translation, and then used my Linguistic knowledge to pursue an M.Sc. in Multilingual Computing. That’s when I truly fell in love with Natural Language Processing and decided to keep on learning and exploring! Therefore, besides my day job in NLP and my personal projects, I am currently a PhD student. My Research focuses on Text Generation and Question Answering Machine Learning Models.
In order to improve and advance on all these different aspects and projects, I followed many online courses, classes and tutorials, and I still do. I tried to undertake different projects, both at work and on my free time, and I keep learning as much as I can. Read this article if you want to learn more about my journey!

How To Measure Success
When learning new skills, especially if you are learning on your own and/or through online resources, it can be hard to measure assess your improvements. Sometimes, even if you pass all the online tests and even if you solve all the exercises correctly, you haven’t fully acquired the skills, knowledge, and reflexes you actually need to progress. The best way is to start setting SMART goals for yourself. Another great step is to find ways to apply your new acquired knowledge to a personal project. Finally, it is important to understand how and when you are going to go from beginner to intermediate to advanced.

I have spent so much time learning new things on my own. I have also spent so much time feeling like an impostor, or feeling I wasn’t smart enough to learn and reach my goals. And I have also struggled to navigate the gargantuan amount of resources trying to what was worth my precious time. So I completely understand how important it is to identify (and share!) meaningful and information-rich resources. That is exactly why I started this blog; this blog is going to be the tool I wish I had when I started my NLP journey – and I am sharing it with you!
